Melanie (Mei Ling) was born in Switzerland
in a circus family: her father, Fredi Chy, is a martial arts artist and
has performed traditional Chinese acrobatics with Melanies mother, Edith
Chy. It is not surprising that Melanie began learning various circus
disciplines at the age of six.
Mei Ling was an exceptionally gifted student: at
age eight, she performed a remarkable hand balancing and contortion act
at the prestigious Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris, earning
a Silver Medal and making her an instant sensation in the circus world.
Then Mei Ling spent several years practicing
at a demanding pace under a famous Russian acrobat, Nikolai Polonik.
He helped Mei Ling create the elegant hand balancing routine she performs
today. Featured in major circuses and variety shows throughout Europe,
Mei Ling made her American debut in 2002 with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey,
where she was given center ring.
She Mei Ling currently performing with the
Big Apple Circus.
Combining the mental rigor of a martial
master, the agility of an Olympic gymnast and the performance panache
of a modern dancer, Mei Ling revives the ancient art of hand balancing.
