THE FILMS
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)
One of the first film adaptations of Victor Hugo's novel about hunchback
Quasimodo's love for Esmeralda. The sheer spectacle of production and
Chaney's poignant, star-making performance are unforgetable. For the
filming Chaney wore a hump and harness weighing 60 pounds, twisting
his torso to feel the pain of Quasimodo and delivering a performance
that earned him worldwide fame.
Metropolis (1927)
Generally considered the first
great science-fiction film, Metropolis fixed for the rest of the century
the image of a futuristic city as a
hell of scientific progress and human despair. From this film, in various
ways, descended ``Dark City'', ``Blade Runner,'' ``The Fifth Element,''
and Batman's Gotham City. The laboratory of its evil genius, Rotwang,
created the visual look of mad scientists for decades to come.
Metropolis employs vast sets, 25,000 extras and astonishing special
effects to create two worlds: the great city of Metropolis, with its
stadiums, skyscrapers and expressways in the sky, and the subterranean
workers' city, where the clock face shows 10 hours to cram another day
into the workweek. Lang's film is the summit of German Expressionism,
the combination of stylized sets, and dramatic camera angles.
Peter Pan (1924)
Long before Cathy Rigby, Mary Martin, or even Walt Disney, the "Boy
Who Wouldn't Grow Up" stole the hearts of children young and old.
Peter Pan first opened as a play in London on the day after Christmas,
1904. While it drew on a fund of Christmas pantomime traditions including
the "principal boy" (played by a girl), fantastic fairyland
settings, strange creatures and amazing special effects, the play's
phenomenal success was certainly due to the extraordinary character
of Peter Pan
himself. Don't miss one of VOX LUMIERE'S favorite shows!
The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
At the Opera of Paris, a mysterious phantom threatens a famous lyric
singer, Carlotta and thus forces her to give up her role of Marguerite
in Faust for the unknown Christine Daae. Christine meets this masked
phantom in the catacombs, where he lives. What's his goal ? What's
his secret ? This brilliant film based on Gaston Leroux's classic
novel featuring Lon Chaney, in his greatest role, as the masked composer
who lives deep within the Paris Opera House. Chaney is the entire
film, with the eerie unmasking scene that still makes audiences gasp! Intolerance (1923)
Intolerance is regarded as one of the greatest American films of
all time. The grandeur of this spectacle has never been topped.
Intolerance consists of four separate but parallel stories portraying
intolerance throughout four different ages of human history spanning
2,500 years. The image of Lillian Gish rocking the cradle serves
to link the stories.
